I must have been the luckiest girl alive, when I was growing up.. Even though there were absolutely no other shops within a mile of us – DIRECTLY opposite my house was the local Post Office. It had the Post Office counter on one side and on the other…… it was a sweet shop. It was like a spiritual zen place for me and my friends! It is no wonder the first ever book I bought for myself was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (from W H Smith on Poole High Street – the only place you could buy books then!)

Each shelf was cram packed with huge glass jars of wondrous colours, tastes and sweetie joy,.. The old weighing scales with the worn silver dish stood ready to attention and each of the pristine little white bags all joined by a string were desperate to be torn off and filled with sugar delight for ever eager children…we used to buy sweets by the quarter – no metric then! And Mrs Greene the postmaster’s wife would always overweigh for me! –Quite understandably I hero worshipped her!

What sweets did you love/do you remember?

Here was my top 10…

  1. SHERBERT PIPS
  2. COLA CUBES
