Whether you go with the glow, add some shine or opt for smoky and sultry, here’s my lowdown on three of the hottest summer beauty trends. Apart from the smoky eye (I’m better with a natural look by day) I’ve trialled all three looks by day without any adverse reactions!
looks are left to right!
1. Glow time – BCBG Max Azaria
I love a bronzed glow. Whether you’re naturally dusky or milky –skinned, a dusting of bronze is flattering for any skin tone – and better still – any age. Start by evening out your complexion with primer. Smooth on BD Trade Secrets best-selling Flawless Primer, which minimises pores and fine lines to create a super-smooth base for make-up. Next, apply a bronzing BB cream to create a uniform glow. Smooth on Bourjois BB Bronzer 8-in-1, for a healthy bronze hue. Add extra warmth with a tawny blush, dusted on to cheeks and eyelids. Sleek Makeup Blush in Suede is perfect. Finish by enhancing eyebrows with a brow gel or pencil and adding a subtle tint to lips. Rimmel Lasting Colour Rush Lip Balm in Not An Illusion, gives the perfect hint of colour coupled with shine.
2. Summer smoky Diane Von Furstenberg
If you thought that smoky eyes were purely for winter and evenings, think again. Teamed with tanned dewy skin, glossy lips and sculpted cheeks, it’s a look you can work for cocktail parties and summer weddings.
Start with a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. Smooth on L’Oreal Skin Perfection BB Cream in Medium SPF25, to brighten skin, as well as protecting against sun damage and telltale age spots. Next, use a matt bronze-toned powder to sculpt your cheeks. To find the right place, suck your cheeks in and using small circular movements (to avoid looking stripy) apply the dark shade just in the hollowest part of your cheek. Blend well and apply highlighter to the tops of the cheeks and across the brow bone and bridge of your nose. Invest (and I do mean INVEST) in Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow highlighting and sculpting duo. It’s definitely one of those ‘expensive but worth it’ beauty buys, as it’s brilliant quality and lasts for ages. To create smoky eyes, start by applying a light brown or grey to eyelids, and blending up to the crease. Find the perfect smoky shades in Sleek I Divine Eyeshadow Palette in Au Naturel, £7.99. Next, use a darker shade in and above the crease to create more definition. Use a small eyeshadow brush to apply colour along the lower lash line, then a kohl eye pencil to outline the eye, top and bottom. Rimmel Kohl Kajal Eyepencil in Jet Black, is a steal – plus, it’s super-easy to apply and blend. Finish with a slick of nude lipstick or gloss, such as Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Beige.
3. Go for gloss Jason Wu
Shiny skin is one of summer’s key beauty looks. It’s one you have to be a little bit wary of if you have oily skin, but for dry or normal skin types, it’s a winner. Get the look by using dewy formulations for skin, and creamy eyeshadows, blushers and lip balms. For a lightweight, dewy finish, dot on Maybelline Dream Flawless Nude Foundation, blending it well with your fingertips for sheer coverage. This is one of my favourite foundations as it doesn’t look like you’ve got make-up on when you’re wearing it – but makes skin look fresh. For extra shine, apply a tiny amount of MAC Strobe Cream, to cheekbones, temples, the centre of your eyelids and the inner corner of your eyes and the Cupid’s bow. This is a great ‘rescue’ product when you’re skin is looking less than radiant. Mix it with your base, dab it under your eyes and pop it on your shoulders and décolleté for some va-va-voom. Add a hint of blush with a rosy toned cream such Stila Convertible Color Dual Lip & Cheek Cream in Fuchsia, which is gorgeous on, lips too. Finish by grooming brows with Maybelline Sleek Brow Mascara in Dark Brown, as bushy brows are where it’s at this summer.
